CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY SHELL INLAID LOOKING GLASS.

Late 18th century, probably England. The rectangular mirror plate within a molded gilt slip within a mahogany frame with contrasting string inlaid border beneath the arched crest inlaid with large shell patera. The cresting with detailed scroll work above similarly carved ears. The pendant apron with deeply carved scrolling edge flanked by elongated scrolled volutes. SIZE: 41-1/2″ t x 21″ w. PROVENANCE: Maralyn Young estate, Arundel/Falmouth, ME, being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Mirror plate appears original and blued with foxing. Mahogany frame retains good polished surface with minimal damage. Inlay original. Backboard is original but reset. Early braces on crest to retard warping and to stabilize crack beneath inlay. Ears have been replaced as have tips of some scrolled elements. These were professionally done sometime ago, otherwise good. 51412-78 (600-900) – Lot 2101
