FINE FEDERAL INLAID CHERRY BOWFRONT CHEST OF DRAWERS.

Circa 1791-1805, Connecticut. The rectangular 2-board top with bowed front, the edge with contrasting cross banding above the conforming case fitted with 4 graduated drawers with cockbeaded edges. The chest retains its original, oval brass period hardware engraved with crossed shepherds crook, pineapple and vinery, and stamped on each bail “H.J.”. The initials “HJ” were manufactured by the Birmingham (West Midlands) England Brass manufactures (Thomas Hands & Williams Jenkins) who worked between 1791 and 1805. They were imported into this country by many of the leading American cabinetmakers of this period to accentuate their finished masterpieces. The chest raised on tapering slender French feet.
