JAMES EDWARD BUTTERSWORTH (American, 1817-1894) “SCHOONER YACHT “WANDERER” OFF BELEM CASTLE-TAGUS RIVER”.

Oil on board nautical scene shows a two-mast yacht in full sail with thirteen figures aboard sailing right to left. A large three-mast galleon is in full sail sailing towards viewer. A three-mast tall ship off right land flies American flag. Other boats are seen on horizon. A castle with flags is seen on left side. All under a pink and light blue sky. Signed lower right “J E Buttersworth”. Housed in an antique gesso decorated gilt frame with gilt title and artist plaque. On verso is a Roger King, Newport, Rhode Island, gallery label. SIZE: 8″ x 13″. Overall 15-1/2″ x 20-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From a Maine/Texas estate being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Very good, some very small spot touch-up. 51398-9 (20,000-30,000) – Lot 2081
