JAMES EDWARD BUTTERSWORTH (American/English 1817-1894) “VIEW OF RYDE AND PIER, ISLE OF WIGHT, OPPOSITE PORTSMOUTH.”.

Depicting a two masted sailboat cruising past a bouy towards several sailboats on the right with the Isle of Wight Ryde Pier in the background. The seas are choppy and the sky has a looming gray cloud above the larger vessel. Oil on panel, housed in an elaborate carved giltwood frame, signed lower right “J.E, Buttersworth”, inscribed in pencil with title on verso and bears Godel and Company Fine Art label affixed to panel with inventory number GC-3072. SIZE: 7″ x 18″. Overall 13″ x 24″. PROVENANCE: Mr. & Mrs. Thomas J. Watson Jr.; By descent to Private New York Collector; Godel & Co.
