Please Note: There is a separation on the forehead that occurred in the making. LARGE BLACK CLOCKWORK STORE AUTOMATON.At first glance, one would think this is of German manufacture, but this particular piece was made in Chicago during the early part of the 20th century. Somewhat illegible lettering on the back of the figure indicates copyright and the company’s manufacturer. An extremely heavy piece, the wire armature body covered in plaster has black caricature facial features. When mechanism is wound, his eyes slowly shift from right to left. Within his hands he holds an advertisement for White Cat cigars from a Baltimore tobacco shop. Interesting in nature, his shirt is actually molded plaster as is his face, hands and boots, but his pants and shirtsleeves are cloth. Clockwork is in working order. SIZE: 23″. CONDITION: Overall very good plus with light fading to clothing. Appears to have some aged touch up to facial features. 49016-3 (1,250-2,250) – Lot 2070 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2015 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
