ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN HUGHES (United Kingdom 1806 – 1880) TWO SLOOPS OUTSIDE A BUSY HARBOR.This painting is a true “Attic Find”, found in the central Maine area in untouched “Attic” condition. The oil on canvas depicts a one mast sloop in full sail flying the American flag. It’s owner stands proudly with hands at hips at the bow of the boat. Another sloop is seen off its bow with other boats in the distance, a buoy is seen in the foreground with a ring top. Below horizon shows two areas of tall ship masts and there is a low hillside with two windmills. The boats are seen in a white wave tipped greenish water, all under puffy white cloud and blue sky. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame which has significant losses. *NOTE* On verso of canvas there is a date or initials in script which is illegible, also there appears to be some writing on the stretcher which is also illegible. SIZE: 16-1/2″ x 24″. Overall 23″ x 30-1/2″. CONDITION: As mentioned above, in untouched/un-restored condition there is a 1-1/2″ tear in sky, two small flake losses in ocean, scattered spots, craquelure and surface dirt. Well worth restoring. 51366-1 (8,000-12,000) – Lot 2062
