IVES PENNY CANDY SCALE.Manufactured by Ives-Blakeslee in the latter part of the 19th century, this fancifully cast iron penny scale displays a young lady with her basket in her lap facing her brother, perched on the center of the scale with a simulated woven basket on the other end. The supposed concept was a penny was placed in the young lady’s basket and candies or other goodies were placed in the wicker basket on the other end. Obviously this toy, or should we say, functional scale, would have been found in the general store or candy shop of the time period. Most elaborate and highly detailed iron castings and polychromed in a variety of colors as well as japanned highlighting throughout. In very fine all-original condition. Oftentimes this piece is in poor condition and/or missing the simulated wicker basket. A great visually attractive item appealing to both toy collectors and general store collectors. SIZE: 9″ l. PROVENANCE: Ex-Bob & Jackie Stewart collection. CONDITION: Overall exceptionally strong japanning and highlighting with good plus paint condition to both figures. No breaks, damage or other issues. 49089-2 (1,000-1,500) – Lot 2060 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2015 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
