EXTREMELY RARE FRANCIS, FIELD & FRANCIS PHILADELPHIA EXPRESS.

Francis, Field & Francis is considered to be the first manufacturer of production tin toys. This company’s toys are for the most part rarer than hen’s teeth and it is abnormal to find larger pieces such as this. In fact, according to the consignor, this is believed to be the only surviving example. A rare opportunity for a collector to acquire a piece of American history. Being located in the Philadelphia area, it made sense for them to name the piece “Philadelphia Express”. More than likely, this particular toy was made and sold by a local Philadelphia company. The wagon itself has elaborate punched tin sides with an attached seat for the driver. This toy was never made with a driver and/or horses and was strictly a pull toy for the young child. In as found untouched, all original condition. There appears to be no repairs or paint enhancement whatsoever. SIZE: 12-1/2″ l x 5-3/4″ w. CONDITION: Overall very good condition with uniform wear commensurate with age, but especially strong paint to the cream colored bed with ever so slightly heavier paint wear to left side of wagon. For the most part, the lettering is intact and quite legible. 48379-5 (15,000-20,000) – Lot 2051
