DENT PUBLIC SERVICE BUS.

Without a doubt, this is one of the greatest cast iron toy buses ever manufactured by the various toy makers in the 1920s/30s time period. Two versions of this particular bus were manufactured, one with a higher roof line (this example) and the other version has a lower more sleek roof line. The bus is handsomely enameled in orange with a black louvered roof with gilt trim, nickel plated wheels, and a painted spare tire. Dent Manufacturing which was located in Fullerton (Allentown), PA primarily manufactured hardware, especially for the old style wooden ice boxes. But in the earlier part of the 20th century, up until the mid-30s, they produced toys. Unlike Kenton, Hubley, Arcade their distribution and sales were somewhat more localized and thus not the prolific amount of toys that these other companies produced were sold to the public. In the early 1990s, the Newhart family which was one of the co-owners of Dent Hardware, emptied out their basement and sold at Pennypacker Auctions a large number of original cast iron toys that had been packed away for 60-70 plus years. This particular bus was one of many that were sold at that auction, and it still retains its original sample tag. SIZE: 14″ l. PROVENANCE: From the Laurence Hapgood Estate. CONDITION: Bus is in excellent+ all original condition with some chipping to black roof and minimal chipping wear to the orange sides. 49003-1 (3,000-6,000) – Lot 2013
