CHERRY QUEEN ANNE HIGHBOY.Mid 18th century. Cherry 2 part highboy having 9 drawers on the top section and 4 on the bottom, both parts fitted with deep center drawer having well developed concave shell carvings with leaf decoration, sitting atop carved cabriole legs with acanthus carved knees. Written on paper pasted on back “This highboy came from Sentry Hill Norwich Conn. The colonial house of Thomas Harland a clockmaker and silversmith. The house was built in 1772 and the highboy was placed in the house at that time and was a private house until bought by M. A. Norton. It became the property of General Edward Harland, a grandson of Thomas Harland and a General in the Federal Army, and the president, for many years of the Norwich Society for Savings. The legs of this highboy were cut off by Lusy Harland, a sister of the General who made the feet into a foot stool which is shown in the picture” which is accompanying the piece. The feet were later reattached to this highboy. “The highboy & the foot stool were bought and restored by M. A. Norton, October, 1916.” SIZE: 37″ x 20″ 71″ h. PROVENANCE: Note attached to back of cabinet suggests this highboy comes from Sentry Hill, Norwich Conn and note offers more provenance information. CONDITION: Overall good appearance. Documentation shows that the piece was refinished and restored in 1916 probably at which time the acanthus leaf decoration on the drawer fronts were added. 9-25081 (2,500-3,500) – Lot 2013
