FINE NIMSCHKE-STYLE ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 SADDLE RING CARBINE.

SN 113908. Cal 44 RF Henry. Standard carbine with 20″ bbl, full magazine, integral front band/front sight and 2-position flip rear sight. Receiver has a staple & ring in the left side. Mounted with nicely figured 1-2 X uncheckered American walnut with straight stock & carbine buttplate with trap. Left side of lower tang is marked with the assembly number “1679”, an “X” and a “C”. Matching assembly number is also found at top tang channel of buttstock with number “774” inside toe of buttplate. Receiver & buttplate tang are engraved in the style of L.D. Nimschke consisting of the large vignette of a Mexican eagle on the left side and intertwined foliate arabesque patterns on the right side and on both front flats. The raised areas just forward of the side plates are engraved in a braided pattern with 5 pointed stars in the center. There are other 5 pointed stars around the eagle. Engraving extends over top of receiver, top tang and bottom tang with spurious “L.D.N.” initials behind the trigger. Bottom of carrier is engraved in diamond and foliate patterns. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain thin restored finish. Receiver & buttplate show sharp edge wear and a medium mustard patina. Wood is sound with a fine restored finish. Lever & hammer also show a restored finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 51379-2 JRL (4,000-7,000) – Lot 2003
