*CUSTOM GRIFFIN & HOWE ENGRAVED REMINGTON MODEL 11 SEMI-AUTO SHOTGUN. Cal. 12ga. Spectacular workmanship in both the re-work and engraving. These fine old shotguns were rebuilt by Griffin & How, probably in the 1920’s or 30’s. This shotgun is equipped with 30″ IMP-MOD bbl with vent rib and single bead. It is engraved on the left side “REBUILT BY GRIFFIN & HOWE INC.NEW YORK”. Receiver has absolutely wonderful full coverage engraving, probably by Joe Fugger, but unable to find a signature. The left side of the receiver has two large panels, one of a duck hunter in a boat with a dog in a cat-tail bed preparing to shoot at a landing flock of eight ducks. The front panel is an oval with seven ducks landing near a cattail bed with two other ducks sitting on the water in the background. The area forward of this panel is filled with arabesque, vine and oak leaf patterns with very fine stippled background overall. Right side of the receiver also has two panels with the rear one depicting a hunter sitting in a small boat in a cattail bed firing at five landing geese. The front panel is eight flying geese and the area forward the front panel is also filled with arabesque vine and leaf patterns and all has very fine stippled background. Top of the receiver has a recessed engraved matting 5/16″ wide down the full-length. Each side of the top is completely filled with arabesque vine and oak-leaf patterns. Bbl has oak-leaf, acorn and vine patterns 4″ up on each side of the rib. The bottom of the receiver and triggerguard are covered with arabesque vine and oak-leaf patterns. This engraving is indicative of the most senior master engravers post-turn of the 20th Century. As part of the rebuild at Griffin & Howe, they modified the lower rear of the receiver and built the stock up over the entire backend to make it look like a streamlined, more modern shotgun. The wood is spectacular, burled honey and chocolate, Circassian walnut with 3/4″ coverage checkering on the forearm with about 32-line checkered side panels and 24or 26-line checkering on the straight grip. The trigger was custom built into a pedestal design with checkered leading edge. Stock is 14-1/2″ over a solid red recoil pad. The quality of this workmanship is far, far superior to anything ever produced at Remington. CONDITION: New, as it left Griffin & Howe, retaining all of its fine custom finish to both metal and wood with only very minor handling and storage marks. Truly one of the finest custom Remingtons to be offered for sale. 4-46175 JR509 (8,000-12,000)
