PAIR OF DECORATIVE IVORY STOCKED FLINTLOCK PISTOLS. NSN.. Cal. .70. This is a very attractive near matching pair of ivory stocked pistols. Metal portions of the pistols themselves are for the most part late 17th to 18th Century. Ivory stocks however and gold mounts were added at a much later time. 13-1/2″ part oct . bbl with xxx cartouche on top at rear. 5-1/8″ banana locks are marked “MICHARIVS/BRED” at the tail. Top of one hammer is replaced. Top jaw and screw of the other are also replaced. One bbl has been bushed and the touchhole moved 1/4″ to the rear and lower to match the pan. Brass furniture appears to be old but the counter-plates do not have quite the same spacing as the lock. They are mounted on top of the stock with a thin sheet of later ivory cut out to make it look like they are inlaid. No attempt was made to achieve the same effect with the triggerguards. They are simply screwed to the surface of the stock with free air in the spaces. There are various repairs and replacements to the ivory, which mostly have natural age cracks. Carved heads are similar but not identical and show no age cracks. The features of the helmet have broken off and been repaired on one. Please Note: Accompanying this lot is a letter from Peter Dredge, at one time owner of the Angel Armoury in London, dated 1978 and indicates that he showed these pistols to Mr. J. F. Hayward the head of Sotheby’s Firearms Dept. who purportedly indicated that these were made by Jan Micharivs. According to the letter Mr. Dredge states that Mr. Hayward felt that the pistols were completely authentic late 17th Century Dutch Ivory mounted pistols and a very rare and fine pair of which he indicates that similar examples are now illustrated in the book “Dutch Firearms” by Arne Hoff. We do not concur. As we have indicated above, we believe the metal portions of the pistol are essentially late 17th or 18th Century and the ivory stocks and gold mounts were added at a much later time. Nonetheless this is a very handsome pair and quite showy. CONDITION: Fine appearance with defects as noted. 4-46107 (10,000-20,000)
