VERY RARE LEPAGE SUPERPOSED LOAD PISTOL. SN 361. Cal. .62 with multi-groove rifling. 7-1/2″ swamped oct. bbl. All metal surfaces are covered with sculpted vine and flowers, further enhanced by fine engraving and gold highlighting. The bbl is marked “Le Page mountier anqr du roi à Paris” in high relief gold on top and “Bis in Wein” in sculpted steel on the bottom. The left lock is marked “LePage” and right “arqr du roi”. There are three different dragons worked into the engraving. The mechanism is similar to that patented by John Lindsay in America and used on his patent pistols and muskets during the Civil War and on the Walsh revolvers. The right hammer fires the front charge and the left hammer fires the rear. There is an inclined plane on the right tumbler that regulates the order of firing. The left hammer can not fire until the right hammer is down. CONDITION: Fine overall with smooth gray patina on the surface contrasting nicely with the darkened background of the engraving. The damascus pattern on the bbl is strong. Bore is bright, almost giving the appearance that the gun has never been fired. Left side of the stock and shield at the rear of the frame show some light dents and scratches from laying it on that side. The possibility of the gun being unfired is supported by the appearance of the nipples and the fact that the switching mechanism on the trigger is out of adjustment and the hammer can not be lowered without assembly. 4-47616 FS (7,500-15,000)
