RARE ENGLISH FLINTLOCK INDIAN TRADE MUSKET CIRCA 1812. Flintlock musket has been converted to percussion. 37″ barrel, approx. Cal. 60. Has a wonderful silver escutcheon plate of Indian with head feathers, quiver and bow on top of the wrist. Guns presented to the chiefs were embellished with these escutcheons. These are extremely rare and the nearly identical example can be found in the Ottawa Museum, Canada. The stock deeply branded I W D” (Indian War Department). Bbl stamped “London” with hallmarks. Hammer, lockplate and all brass furniture engraved. Round bbl with oct breech. CONDITION: Several repairs including stretched out forend for approx. 21-1/2″. An old copper repair to the wood beneath the lockplate. Some of the holding pins missing. Bbl has dark brown patina overall together with the lock and hammer. Plenty of pitting near the nipple. Stock chipped in various places and with a dark brown aged patina. Gun shows much use as would any Indian trade musket. 4-46200 (3,500-5,500)
