WINCHESTER DELUXE ENGRAVED PRESENTATION MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44CF. Spectacular 66 rifle with 24″ oct. bbl, full magazine, about 4-X wood with uncheckered straight stock and crescent brass buttplate. Receiver is engraved with 80% coverage, fine arabesque and floral pattern engraving with vignettes of a squirrel on the left front flat and a duck and rabbit on the right side, attributed to Conrad Ulrich. Left side has a panel with the presentation “J.H. ALVORD”. The balance of the receiver, tangs, foreend cap and buttplate heel tang are engraved with matching patterns. The bbl has a Rocky Mountain German silver front sight and Henry-style ladder sight. It is accompanied by a packet of information relating to James H. Alvord, who was appointed U.S. Marshall for Idaho Territory on March 3, 1870. Mr. Alvord is listed as having been born in 1824 and died in 1876. The buttstock numbers are all matching and the initials “JHA” are stamped on the left side of the lower tang under the wood (which usually indicates that the presentation was ordered directly from the factory). SN 35923. CONDITION: The bbl and magazine tube retain most of a fine restored finish. The receiver and brass parts are a medium mustard patina with traces of the original gold wash in the engraving and in the very sheltered areas. Wood is sound and retains about all of a high luster restored finish with some chemical spots on the forearm and buttstock. Strong bore, dark in the grooves with a ring about mid-point. A fine scarce presentation 66. 4-46595 JR201 (10,000-20,000)
