FINE CONSTABLE FOWLING PIECE WITH DERINGER MARKINGS. NSN. 12ga, 39″ part oct. bbl. The breech plug has a sunken gold cartouche with raised letters “CONSTABLE/PHILDA”. The bbl is marked “H. DERINGER PHILa”, while the lock is marked only with the ‘H. DERINGER” marking, possibly to denote the conversion of the Constable fowler to percussion. The hammer style and engraving is similar to that used by Deringer on pistols but he is not known for having done repair work. There is a silver thumb piece with the initials “FEW” at the wrist. CONDITION: Rust-brown patina over all with light to moderate pitting on the triggerguard and buttplate. Stock has a short crack between the buttplate and cheek-piece and another from the lock screw to the bbl channel. Gun is very dirty with oil and dirt almost filling the checkering at the wrist. Mechanically crisp. 4-47206 FS674 (1,000-2,000)
