US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1895 KRAG CARBINE.SN 24476. Cal. 30-40. 22″ bbl. Blue and case colored finish. Straight grained American walnut stock. Bbl has a ramp front sight and muzzle has been slightly turned down. Correct carbine rear sight. Correct bbl band and hand guard. Receiver is marked “1895” in front of “SPRINGFIELD ARMORY” and SN. Saddle ring on left side of stock. Stock has a circle “P” proof mark behind trigger guard under no. 50. Stock is otherwise unmarked. Buttplate is of flat type with cleaning rod compartment and slightly rounded toe. This is a rare variant of the model 1896 carbine produced in 1895. SN is in the correct range for this model. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl has been cleaned and re-blued. Front sight blade is missing. Rear sight is very good. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Bbl band retains 50% blue finish. Receiver is a gray-brown patina overall with traces of case color remaining especially on left side. Markings are sharp. Bolt is a gray-brown patina. Extractor shows traces of blue. Stock is very good with a sharp inspector’s mark and small handling marks overall. Buttplate is a silver-gray patina with some erosion. Some parts are altered to conform to changes found in later models. An opportunity to obtain a rare variant of a Krag carbine. 49973-40 TEP (800-1,800) – Lot 1718
