LOT OF MISCELLANEOUS MERCHANDISE & LARGE CEDAR CHEST. Lot consists of an extremely well made large cedar chest, 36″ long by 23″ wide by 22″ tall of fine dovetailed red cedar with wonderful long strap hinges and a fine mortised lock with original key. The front of the chest is hand painted in large letters “CAPT A.M. TUCKER/AQM”. This chest was the property of Alba Mark Tucker. Mr. Tucker was born in West Hartford, VT in 1836 He worked on various railroads from 1850 until October of 1863 when he entered the Army as a Captain and Asst. quartermaster in charge on constructing US Military Railroads. From December 1863 to March 1864 he was the purchasing and disbursing quartermaster for US Military railroads, Department of the Cumberland from May 1864-December 1865; purchasing and disbursing quartermaster for payment of all railroad accounts for transportation of all railroad supplies. After the war he was Asst. Superintendent and Superintendent of a variety of railroads, a General Manager of two or three others and the Director of three others and finally, was also the General Agent for the Erie Railroad. His military service was from August 1st 1862, when he enlisted as a Private and was mustard out December 8th, 1865 as a Brevette Colonel. After the war, in addition to all of his railroad service, he was president of the Board of Trustees, Elkhart, Indiana; Auditor Elkhart County; President of a bank; Mayor of the city of Elkhart and then Postmaster of Elkhart. Included in this lot are a number of photographs of Mr. Tucker, one of his father, several deeds for real estate, correspondence with the US Auditors office regarding a claim and other miscellaneous papers and letters. Also included is an old ledger with lists of real estate. Also, is a large sepia toned photograph, 13-1/4″ x 9-1/2″ image size of a large group of men outside a cabin in the woods. One of the figures appears to be Mr. Tucker. Also, is a 8-1/4″ x 7″ photograph of Mr. Tucker. Additionally, there is a wonderful Kelly & Co. German silver presentation railroad lantern with clear glass globe inscribed “CAPT. AM TUCKER/A.Q.M.”. Also included is a pocket hypodermic syringe kit with nickel silver body having a glass tube with finger plungers with two screw on needles and four small cork stoppered vials, one, slightly damaged, labeled Morphine Sulfate, and a glass tube aspirator. Also included, is a fine silver goblet inscribed “CAPT. AMT/AQM”. Additionally included is a fine antique white lambskin Masonic apron. And last but not least, is Capt. Tuckers nightshirt, beautifully embroidered with his initials on the pocket. CONDITION: Chest is excellent, the photographs are generally sharp and clear. Lantern is excellent, retaining most of its fine original finish. Globe is also excellent. Goblet is fine with one or two small dents. Satin border on the apron is deteriorating and has suffered minor losses. Nightshirt is yellowed, is still but sturdy. 4-46033 JR540 (3,000-3,500)
