IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF APPROX. 200 CIVIL WAR AUTOGRAPHS. This is a fantastic album. It is a scrapbook containing approx. 200 small embossed cards, each one containing the signature and usually other information of Civil War veterans. The signatures included in this scrapbook read at times like a “who’s who” list of Civil War Union personnel. The list includes such people as President William McKinley, President Benjamin Harrison, Buffalo Bill Cody, Joshua Chamberlain and Thomas Bracket Reed. Other signatures include those of 20 Civil War Generals, 3 Navy Admirals and a Captain and 13 past Commander’s in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. There is also a signature from a crew member of the USS Kearsarge who was a Medal of Honor winner and quite a few signatures of soldiers from various Maine Regiments and then there are about 40 soldiers from other state regiments according to the list. A tremendous collection of signatures. There were probably accumulated over a period of two or three years, starting around 1900, judging by the dates from the signatures, and were probably collected at major G.A.R. meetings because there were some very famous personages attending. In addition to this scrapbook of these wonderful signatures there is also a loose-leaf binder containing additional information and background on many of the more famous personages whose signatures are included in the scrapbook. Included are photocopies of pages from what appears to be a very exhaustive Civil War book. These photocopies are highlighted and are accompanied by photocopies of the original signature cards. There are at least 30 of these cards that are duplicated and are accompanied by some addition information. SIZE: The autograph cards are approx. 2-1/2″ by 4″ and they are pasted into the scrapbook, eight to a page. CONDITION: The scrapbook was made of paper that probably has a rather high acid content since there is some brittleness and losses at the edge of the pages. The cards appear to have been printed on nicer, acid free paper and they are remarkably bright and clean even after all these years. The scrapbook is cloth-bound with some gold embossing and the cover is in OK shape. Shows wear and use. Many of the interior pages are loose and clipped on the edges. For a collector of historical signatures, this scrapbook is a virtual treasure trove of autographs. 8-87116 (7,500-10,000)
