CONFEDERATE FIRST NATIONAL GUIDON FRAGMENT. 25″ x 37″ three bar pennant with 16″ x 21-1/2″ blue canton with eight stars. Only 3″ of the tails remain. This fragment has been sewn to a piece of brown burlap, probably for display in a Massachusetts GAR post. This is supported by a marking in the center of the flag “3rd/Va. Cav./Post #8 Mass./G.A.R. 1888”. A letter from Howard Madaus confirms the originality of this flag and indicates that the 3rd Virginia Cavalry had an encounter with the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry at Aldie, Virginia, 17 June 1863. Copies of pages of the book on the 3rd confirm this. In addition a letter from noted textile authority Fonda Thompsen also accompanies this lot. Her analysis also confirms the age and authenticity of the flag. CONDITION: Many holes. Very fragile cloth requiring the burlap backing. 4-45911 FS727 (10,000-20,000)
