CONFEDERATE FIRST NATIONAL SILK “BIBLE” FLAG AND DIARY. A small silk flag typical of these made for soldiers by loved ones to carry off to war. These flags found in many forms and in varying sizes are documented as being carried into the field by many patriotic Confederate soldiers. Often folded and placed in the soldier’s Bible in battle they were a symbol of honor and country. This example is particularly nice measuring 15″ x 8.75″ of red, white and blue silk very finely sewn and of high quality. The First National Pattern Confederate flag has three broad stripes, two red at top and bottom and one horizontally positioned in the center. The canton is of bright blue silk with eleven large 5-point stars painted in bright gold paint arranged in a circle. The fly is neatly hemmed as is the haft side with two flat red ribbon ties sewn at top and bottom and one white ribbon tie in the center. Accompanying the flag is an associated small leather covered pocket diary embossed “Diary/1864” within a small wreath on the outer flap. The diary is largely blank except for the pencil inscription “Samuel A. Atmill/Washington/ADC/1864” on the front fly and a couple of later inscriptions in the back. A small flat stone is tucked in the back of the pouch. The group was found in a blue paperboard stationary box dating to period 1870-90 along with a length of twisted gold worsted cord. CONDITION: Excellent. The flag’s colors are very bright with no losses and just minor discoloration. Tiny bits of the gold paint are missing where the flag has been folded for many years. The diary is very good, edges of the leather cover are scuffed. The box containing the flag, diary and cord is a bit broken up. An extremely nice Confederate “Bible” flag which appears to be Civil War period by its construction and materials. 4-45516 (2,000-3,000)
