CONFEDERATE MODIFICATION FIRST MODEL VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY SWORD, MARKED 1st VA. REGT. A superb example of the Virginia Manufactory of Arms’ alteration of a 1st Model horseman’s saber for Confederate Cavalry use. The sword has the standard 1st model with iron hilt having a slotted iron guard, square profile pommel and backstrap with square capstan nut. Grip is of wood covered in black leather. Blade has been slimmed and trimmed down to 32-1/2″ and the back is legibly stamped “1, Va REGt”. Sword has been fitted with a substantial iron scabbard with an iron throat and cast brass carrying rings. A wonderful example of a first model Virginia Manufactory saber altered for Confederate use. CONDITION: Very good. Entire saber has an untouched dark plum brown patina. Blade is gray with several dark spots here and there. Grip leather is strong with minor losses, however, the wire wrap is missing. Two small arms of the pierced guard are fractured. Scabbard is very good, no dents, just surface pitting here and there. 4-47551 CW (3,200-3,800)
