UNMARKED CONFEDERATE FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD AND SCABBARD, ATTRIBUTED TO BOYLE & GAMBLE, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. An unmarked but distinctive product of the Virginia scrod manufacturer Boyle & Gamble of Richmond. Straight, single edged blade 32-1/4″ long with an unstopped fuller and typical edge line fault. The cast brass guard is very light with a small two branch knuckle bow. Pommel is crude and plain, without decoration. Grip is of wood, covered in black leather and wrapped in single strand iron wire. Scabbard is of lap jointed and soldered iron tarred, or painted black during the period. Scabbard has a heavy brass throat slipped and soldered over the outside of the iron scabbard body. The two ring mounts are of plain, undecorated brass and the drag, also of brass, applied to bottom of the iron scabbard. CONDITION: Very good, the blase has aged to a medium mottled gray color, very attractive, all brass furniture is uncleaned and carried a mellow old patina. 2-branch knuckle bow is bent downward. Grip leather has losses of approximately 20%, but the wire and remaining leather is good. Scabbard is very strong, with good color and but one minor dent on the reverse side. A wonderful example of this Confederate firm’s work, in good stable and untouched condition. 4-46163 CW (6,500-8,500)
