OGDEN NICHOLAS ROOD (American, 1831-1902) TWO SEASCAPES.

Watercolor and gouache on paper Housed in matching carved wood frames with gilt liners, matted under glass 1) Waves crashing left, signed and dated lower right “O. N. Rood 1865” 2) Waves crashing right, signed and dated lower right “O. N. Rood 1874” Note: Rood was an American physicist and amateur artist best known for his work in color theory. He studied at Yale and Princeton University in 1854-1858. He studied art in Germany and later became the Chair of Physics at Columbia University. In 1879, he published a book on color theory entitled Modern Chromatics With Applications to Art in Industry, published in 1879. Rood was a member of the American Watercolor Society and lectured about color theory at the National Academy of Design. SIZE: 1) 8-3/4″ x 11-1/2″. Overall: 21″ x 25″. 2) 9″ x 11-1/2″.
