Oil on canvas Housed in an early 20th century mahogany frame Unsigned, inscribed upper right “Pane E Lavoro” Note: Pane e Lavoro translates to bread and work, and was the name of the Italian American working class movement that took hold in America around 1919. The painting also references the Giornale del Popolo which was a newspaper established in 1926, which helps date the painting to a period after 1926. Abe Lincoln holds a letter and glances at the gathered workers, a reference to Karl Marx’s 1865 letter written to Lincoln praising him for being a proponent for the working class. This genre work was likely painted as an illustration for the journal of the people or a work of political propaganda in support of the Italian working class in America. SIZE: 19″ x 25-1/2″.
