GERMAN TARGET OR JAGER RIFLE. Cal. about 56. Fine early percussion rifle with 30″ swamped oct. damascus bbl with recessed muzzle, small front sight, missing the bbl sight and missing the tang sight. Top of the bbl is inlaid in silver “K. REICHEL A OTTINGEN”. Breech plug is lightly engraved with fancy scallops and a flash shield and has a gold “1” inlaid on the top flat. Top tang, hammer, lockplate, small decorative sideplate, triggerguard tang and nosepipe tang are beautifully engraved with floral arabesque patterns with the hammer engraved in a dolphins head. Lockplate also has a gold “1”. It is fitted with dbl set triggers, a fancy flowing wood triggerguard with finger rest and grip that has three German silver inlays on the bottom. Triggerguard tang is a long pointed pineapple finial. Wrist is very nicely checkered. Stock is of beautiful burl walnut with massive Schutzen-style cheek-piece that, just behind, has a deep relief carving of a reclining stag surrounded by leaves and trees. Buttplate is smooth steel with a long stepped top tang engraved to match the rest of the gun. Bottom of the bbl has two iron guides and an iron nosepipe and the stock is secured with a single wedge through rectangular German silver escutcheons. CONDITION: Good to very good. Bbl retains 60-70% thin damascus pattern, balance of the metal is a silver-gray. Forearm has a small crack at the left escutcheon, the stock, a couple of small nicks and dings but otherwise is sound and retains a fine oil finish. Ramrod is a replacement and the swivels are missing. Good mechanics. 4-47027 JR383 (1,250-1,750)
