COLLECTION OF 12 WEST AFRICAN SILVER PLATED “MANILLA CURRENCY”.

Circa 19th century. Collection of 12 silver “Manilla Currency” also known as ring money that were collected by a missionary in West Africa and engraved and cased in a leather box, re-purposed as napkin rings. “Manilla’s” were manufactured in Europe in bronze, copper and occasionally gold to be used in trade for slaves. This group of rings were silver plated over bronze or brass. SIZE: w. 2-3/8″ each. Case 7″ x 6″ x 3″ h. PROVENANCE: From a Maine collection. CONDITION: Rings very good, each etched with a monogram and a number. Case has wear to corners and back panel is detached. 9-94730 (400-600) – Lot 1589
