LOT OF 4 DR. JAYNE’S AND DR. MILES’ ADVERTISING SIGNS.1) Dr. Miles “Nervine” nerve tonic preparation which promised to “Bring Sweet Sleep”. Lithograph on textured paper of a young woman in deep slumber as testimonial to the effectiveness of this patent medicine. The Dr. Miles Medical Co. was founded in Indiana in 1884 by Franklin Miles, operating as an independent firm until 1979 when it was acquired by Bayer. In original marked frame that reads “Dr. Miles Nervine” at the top and “The Great Nerve Tonic” at the bottom. 2) Dr. D. Jayne’s “Alterative” R.O.G. sign captioned “The Best Blood Purifier For Scrofula, Cancer, Epilepsy, Dropsy, Skin And Liver Diseases”. Sign maker has made use of silver and gold foils for lettering highlights and applied an embossed paper die cut of the child’s head. Reverse retains 70% of the original almanac label dated 1890. 3) Scarce Dr. D. Jayne’s paper sign with portrait of Benjamin Franklin promoting this company’s “Expectorant for Coughs, Colds, Asthma, Lung and Throat Diseases” and for their “Tonic Vermifuge – A Sure Cure for Worms”. 4) Dr. D. Jayne’s paper sign with illustration of General LaFayette as testimonial to the effectiveness of this company’s “Expectorant for Coughs, Colds, Asthma, Lung and Throat Diseases” and “Tonic Vermifuge – A Sure Cure for Worms”. SIZE: 1) Overall: 31-1/4″ w x 41″ h. 2) Overall: 13-1/4″ w x 11-1/4″ h. 3) Image: 13-1/2″ w x 28″ h. 4) Image: 13-1/2″ w x 27-3/4″ h. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Richard J. Miller. CONDITION: 1) Very good; lithograph appears to need a thorough cleaning. There appears to be some discoloration across the very top of the sign. A couple of scattered scuffs and paint splatter. 2) Very good; slight lifting to the reverse paint surrounding the child’s head, typical to these signs. 3) Very good to excellent; minor crease next to Ben’s hair; horizontal roll crease across bottom edge. 4) Very good; exhibits some horizontal roll creasing with some separation through “Tonic Vermifuge”.
