RARE SHEFFIELD BOWIE WITH RECUMBENT LION POMMELS.Knife measures 14″ overall with 8-5/8″ wide clip point blade having about 4″ clip, maker marked “JOHN WEST’S / UNRIVALED / CUTLERY” stamped in shield on ricasso. This pommel design was popular in the 1840’s and made in the same coffin style as the half horse – half alligator. Polished bone grip with 2-3/8″ oval German Silver cross guard. CONDITION: Very good overall, blade has several chips in cutting edge, some areas of original luster but overall silver/gray with pin prick pitting, old sharpening. Makers mark crisp and discernible. Handle will come off exposing about 2″ of tang which is broken and other portion still in grip. Knife still displays well, exhibiting rare pommel which has good patina, retaining traces of bright original silver plate. Accompanying sheath is of later vintage. 50167-1 JS (2,000-3,000) – Lot 1506
