TWO RARE CIVIL WAR BOWIE KNIVES.Pair of typical large knives used by Civil War soldiers. 1)15-1/2″ overall, 10-1/2″ clip point blade with solid brass ribbed grip most likely made in Cincinnati by one of several bayonet manufacturers who made bayonets for famous German immigrant “Turner” organizations. We have not seen another of these examples sold previously. 2)Massive 15″ Bowie overall with large 10″ blade, 1-5/8″, .28″ thick at ricasso & orig scabbard. Blade is full firm marked “G. WOSTENHOLM&SON / WASHINGTON WORKS / SHEFFIELD” along with his trademark “I*XL” logo on ricasso & scabbard. there are numerous photographs of Union soldiers going to war carrying similar stag-gripped Bowies. CONDITION: 1) Fair to good overall. Blade has severe rust & pitting as seen in photos but has well discerned clip & point. Brass grip has numerous small dents & scratches with light mustard patina. Accompanying scabbard is sound & solid retaining frog button on throat & fits knife well. 2) Very Good overall. Blade is gray with good markings, light sharpening, several nicks in cutting edge, one quite large about 3/8 x 1/4″ as can be seen in photos. Grip is very good with hand worn stag slabs. German silver cross guard & scabbard mounts have silver/gray patina with small nicks & scratches. Tip has bend. Scabbard body is sound, missing added belt loop with scuffing & cracks on either edge near tip & crack on obverse with missing veneer about 1″ above tip. 50195-3 JS (4,000-6,000) – Lot 1505
