GROUP OF SEVEN AMERICAN SWORDS.

This grouping has 5 fine examples of American cavalry sabers, dating from 1820 through WWI and Civil War Naval cutlass. 1) 1821 dated Nathan Starr saber in fine original condition with orig scabbard. 2) 1847 dated Ames heavy cavalry saber with original scabbard. 3) Most unusual example of mounted officer’s sword. Blade is 1861 dated Ames Cavalry, though hilt is model 1850 foot officer’s which is an unusual combination but some officers wanted their regulation sword with a fighting blade and metal scabbard instead of the regulation issue leather with brass mounts. 4) Regulation 1906 iron hilted U.S. cavalry saber, in original scabbard. 5) 1914 dated Patton cavalry saber in original scabbard. 6) 1862 dated Ames Naval cutlass. 7) Sword cane with 25-1/2″ colichemarde blade, 34″ overall, horn handle with silver colored ferrule with owners initials “JB”. Also included in this lot is a 35″ crown stag handled cane gun. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: 1) Very good to fine overall, complete leather grip wrap, missing wire. Original scabbard, retains much of its black paint with several large dents about 12″ from tip. 2) Very good overall, clean, well marked blade with scattered staining and pitting, grip is re-wrapped. Scabbard is pitted overall. 3) Very good overall, well marked Ames blade with inspectors marks, grip retains most of its original leather with wear and contemporary repair to twisted brass wire. 4) Very good to fine overall, blade is gray with staining and light pitting, well marked and inspected. Original grip with scuffing. 5) Blade retains much of its original luster with staining and pitting, well marked. Scabbard has been re-painted with old bend about 12″ from drag. 6) Basket bent with small crack, grip dry and heavily chipped. Blade is gray with pitting, scabbard is excellent reproduction. 7) Very good overall. Cane gun is non-functional, action will not close, hairline cracks in middle bamboo section of bbl. 49973-239 JS (3,000-5,000) – Lot 1502
