INSCRIBED AMERICAN U.S. MODEL 1851 NAVAL OFFICER’S SWORD. Regulation U.S. Model 1851 Naval Officer’s Sword with a presentation on the blade which is extremely difficult to read. Single edged blade, slightly curved is unsigned and very dark from rust and age. A central panel on one face is etched with a presentation which reads (deciphered to the best of my ability) Presented by _____ brothers (Masonic Symbol)/Boston Jan’y ___ 1865 to/ ___GHLAND, U.S.N. Hilt is of standard form, cast brass with “U.S.N.” in the counter guard and dolphin head quillon and knuckle bow. Pommel with standing eagle and stars inset in the cap and laurel leaf decoration. Grip is of sharkskin with twisted wire wrap. Scabbard is a reproduction replacement of steel and brass. CONDITION: Fair. Blade is heavily rusted, the etched decoration barely visible. Hilt is somewhat loose and the grip severely worn but wire is tight. Scabbard is a reproduction. I believe that the inscription can be pulled out the darkness of the blade by someone very carefully working with fine steel wool. I, however, will leave that task to the buyer. 4-45095 CW (500-900)
