HISTORIC INSCRIBED PRESENTATION SWORD AND PERSONAL EFFECTS OF BREVET BRIGADIER GENERAL SUMNER CARRUTH, MASSACHUSETTS. This historic grouping consists of General Carruth’s inscribed high grade presentation sword and a lot of drawings, lithographs, clippings, gauntlets, books and carte de visite photograph. The sword is a presentation grade officer’s sword made in Solingen by W. Clauberg and sold through the firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, New York (and so marked on the reverse and obverse ricasso of the blade). The blade is 35-1/4″ long, slightly curved with a single edge and a primary and secondary fuller. Blade is decorated with an etched panel in the center of the blade having a spread winged eagle on one side and “U.S.” on the other. Hilt is of cast brass, gold plated with a fancy 3-branch knuckle-guard having cast floral sprays within the branches. Pommel is heavily decorated with rococo scrolls. Grip is of cast silver with vertical ribs, alternating from plain to a fish-scale-like pattern. Scabbard is of steel with silver plated brass mounts. Top mounts are identical, plain on the reverse and engraved with scrolls and sprays on the front. The drag, also of silver plated echoes the same engraved decoration as the top mounts. The scabbard rig-bands are heavily cast with laurel and oak leaves, silver plated. On the reverse of the top mount is inscribed: Sumner Carruth/Col. 35th MASS. INFTy/Presented by the/Non-Commissioned/Officers of his REGt/June 17th/1863. CONDITION: Very good. The blade is bright with a few areas of dark surface staining near the tip, in the center (affecting one etched panel) and near the ricasso. Hilt is very good with approximately 10-20% of the gold wash remaining. Grip is fine. Scabbard is very strong, however, none of the factory blueing on the steel body remains 1) Framed 9-1/4″ x 14″ sight black and white print of a Union encampment. No signature visible. CONDITION: Heavily foxed on left side. Clean on the right side. No tears or checks in the field as shown. In old 17″ x 21-1/2″ frame. Very good condition. 2) Batchelder lithograph Capture of a Rebel Lunette. Fine full color. 9-1/2″ x 14-1/4″ lithograph with Infantry and Artillery. Featuring the 1st and 11th Massachusetts Volunteers. In period frame. Captain Sumner Carruth is mentioned as the commander of Co H, 1st Massachusetts Volunteers. 3) Frame containing photo of Sumner Carruth surrounded by calligraphic art concerning his service, commissions and battles. He was appointed captain 21 May 1861 and rose to Brigadier General 13 March 1865. 4) 4-5/8″ x 6-1/2″ Pencil sketch of “Col. Carruth’s Bomb Proof & House “Fort Hell” before Petersburg VA” that is signed lower right “JH” who is probably the Lieutenant Heath who did the calligraphy in the previous frame. 5) Pen and ink print of the “Yankee Mess” for Officers of Co’s K and H”. 4-1/2″ x 5-5/8″ in period frame, marked on the back with a statement saying that General Carruth brought this home with him when he was wounded which was at Fair Oaks. 6) A pair of light colored leather gauntlets. CONDITION: Mildew stained with some insect damage. One seam and the binding across the top of one are unstitched. Both are marked “CJS” inside. 7) History of the 30-5th Regiment, Boston 1854. A Carte de Visite of Colonel Carruth is pasted on the flyleaf. It is also autographed by him. There are numerous clippings, notes, etc., inter-leafed with many pages marked that mention Carruth. CONDITION: Fine. 8) 4-5/8″ X 8″ sepia-tones photograph mounted on card showing “Fort Hell”, the quarters of the 35th Mass at Petersburg, VA in the winter of ’64-65. An inked “X” marks the quarters in the foreground, probably Carruth’s. CONDITION: Very good. A rich and historic presentation sword and grouping of personal effects related to an well noted, and gallant officer who began his career as Captain of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry and was quickly promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, then Colonel and Commander of the 35th Massachusetts Infantry. These units were hard fought seeing action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, South Mountain, Vicksburg and Hatcher’s Run and Petersburg. Carruth was wounded at least twice during his career and was appointed Brevet Brigadier General USV on April 2, 1865 for gallant and meritorious service in front of Petersburg. 4-46042 CW (10,000-12,000)
