REED/MERRIAM FIREHOUSE.An exceedingly rare toy, circa late 19th century, with only a handful of surviving examples. Most interesting, the engine house constructed of wood and painted was probably made by Reed for the Merriam toy company. Originally a tin and wooden engine would have been placed inside the house and by means of a lever at the rear of the firehouse, the doors would pop open and the horse drawn pumper would lurch forward off to the fire. Separate activations for a fireman popping out of the front window over the doors and another for the fire bell. For a similar and complete version, refer to Julia’s November 2013 auction, lot 3110. A couple noteworthy points is that there is actually a window cut into the right side and stenciled on the rear of the building are indicators for the four separate actions: bell, front doors, engine release, and fireman appearing in front window. Most toys of this time period were handmade, so it is not unusual to find oddities and variations among the same toy. Although this was designed for a specific fire engine, this would be a great accompaniment for any early American tin fire engine. SIZE: 10-3/4″ l x 7″ w x 9″ t. CONDITION: Toy is good to very good, lacking fire vehicle and various components. Some separation to wooden casing and various nail holes to roof. 1-14114 (500-1,000) – Lot 1473 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction - Fall 2014 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
