HIGH GRADE AMES PRESENTATION MILITIA OFFICER’S SWORD BELONGING TO CAPTAIN A.H. KELSEY, MASSACHUSETTS. Extremely high grade Ames militia officer’s sword and scabbard inscribed as follows: A token of respect to their commander/ Capt. A.H. Kelsey/ by the/ Lewiston Light Infantry/ Oct. 18th 1856. Perhaps the “new” sword Capt. Kelsey was given when he passed along his earlier sword to Captain Upton (see #4-47473). The sword has a double edged blade 31″ long with a central fuller and etched panels on both faces with an eagle, military trophies and floral decoration. “Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee, Mass.” is etched at the ricasso. Crossguard is fancy with winged quillons and a foliated langet with an American eagle and shield on the face. The ferrule is decorated with acanthus leaf, and the six-paneled grip engraved with rococo scrolls. The pommel is a stylized knight’s head with large helmet crest and chain guard. Scabbard is of gold washed brass with fancy cast furniture, the top mount having an American shield and the bottom with applied laurel leaf decoration. The reverse of the scabbard is signed Ames as well. CONDITION: Superb! This sword retains approximately 90% of its original finish. Blade is bright with frosty etching, and the entire exterior of the sword is flashy gold. 4-47475 CW (2,500-3,000)
