NIMSCHKE ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON OLD MODEL NO. 2 ARMY REVOLVER WITH HOLSTER THAT IS MARKED “F. GERIG, WINNSBORO, S.C.”.

SN 19293. Cal .32 RF, 6″ bbl, silver finish with gold washed hammer and cyl. Engraving is in the American scroll style and the engraving is the product of the Nimschke Shop of New York City. Coverage is full scroll on both sides of the frame and bbl lug with intertwining lines ending in small scroll, running down either side of the bbl. There are scroll accents on the top of the bbl and frame on either side of the hinge. There is scroll also behind the hammer with intertwining lines down the backstrap, ending with scroll at the heal of the butt. The butt has simple intertwining line accent around SN. Cyl has a band of scroll work around the center periphery of the cyl. Bbl has the correct S&W address on the top rib. Assembly no. “AA5” is stamped on the grip frame on the right heal under grip. Assembly no. is also stamped on the rear face of the bbl lug. “AA5” is also stamped on the front face of the cyl. 2-pc Mother of Pearl grips are not marked. Holster is of the “Southern” style with the flap tab held by a piece of leather, rather than a brass stud. Holster flap retaining strap is clearly stamped “F Gerig” over “Winnsboro.S.C.” Holster is of a dark brown russet finish. Accompany research shows that Francis Gerig lived in Winnsboro, South Carolina, and operated the Gerig & Chandler Harness Shop. Gerig was apparently in active Confederate service during most of the war. He is listed on the role of Company B “Lyles’ Rifles” as a 3rd Sergeant. Also included is a picture of the old Gerig building on Winnsboro’s Main Street from the 1950’s. The building has since been torn down. Although there is no way to prove it, this was probably a captured gun by a SC officer who went back home at some time and had Gerig”s family ( who were running the harness shop will he was fighting) make the holster for his fancy captured gun. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl is a smooth gray brown patina with clear markings and sharp engraving. There are considerable traces of orig silver finish on the bbl lug and tube ejector. Bore is dark with strong rifling. Frame also shows generous traces of orig silver finish overall, with sharp engraving. Hammer has 50% orig gold wash finish. Cyl has traces of gold wash on the front and especially the rear face. Mother of Pearl grips are very good, with some damage to the right grip at the top and at the heal. Holster is also very good, with over half of its russet brown finish remaining. The orig belt loop is intact. Mark on flap retaining loop is clear. The toe plug is missing. The holster shows the impression of this revolver. An opportunity to obtain a wonderful engraved No. 2 Old Model Army Smith & Wesson Revolver with an extremely scarce marked Southern Holster. 50147-1 (6,500-12,000) – Lot 1446
