IMPORTANT BERDAN SHARPS MILITARY RIFLE. SN 54917. Cal. .54, 30″ bbl. Accompanied by extensive documentation regarding the issue of this rifle to Private Ozias Baker of the 2nd Company of Minnesota Sharp shooters during the Civil War. He was captured at the Battle of Savage Station Virginia on June 29, 1862 and exchanged in October of the same year. On his return to Berdans 1st Regiment of US Sharp shooters, he was issued this rifle. The SN is listed under his name in the Company record Co. L, 1st U.S.S.S. Also accompanying are many documents regarding the battles and campaigns that he fought in. He was wounded on the second day at Gettysburg and served the rest of his enlistment in the hospital in Baltimore. There are only a few Sharps that can be documented as being used at Gettysburg by Berdans Sharp shooters. CONDITION: After the war, various parts were replaced on this gun including: the wood, buttplate, patchbox, bbl bands; the lever; the lever pin and several screws. Original trigger plate, containing the dbl set triggers, shows heating; possibly an attempt to remove the adjustment screw which is broken off. Bbl and action have a gray-brown patina with traces of blue and some dents. Action is functional. FS849 4-47515 (6,000-12,000)
