FOUR RARE AND COLLECTIBLE STEIFF RABBITS AND SQUIRRELS.This charming lot consists of a pair of Steiff rabbits and squirrels. The rabbits are the company’s Osterhasen or Easter Rabbits. Both are begging and head jointed. They are made from mohair which has been airbrushed in brown and tan, especially on their backs. Both have oversized black tipped ears and huge pupil eyes, giving them a sweet, childlike look. Their faces are each detailed with slightly shorter mohair, clear monofilament whiskers, and a pink hand embroidered nose and mouth. Easter Rabbit was made in 25 and 40 cm from 1967-1969. The large rabbit retains his Steiff button and the small rabbit has his button, yellow tag, and chest tag. Their original wicker backpacks have been lost to time. The brown and grey squirrel duo are very fine examples of the exceptional handiwork of Steiff in the early postwar production period, with the grey version being particularly hard to find on the secondary market. Their bodies are made from velvet while their ears and tails are made from long mohair. Both have black eyes and a simple black hand stitched nose and mouth. Their noses are highlighted by a touch of red paint, and each retains their monofilament whiskers. Squirrel was made in 10 cm from 1950-1956 overall. The squirrels do not have Steiff ID. SIZE: Rabbits are 14″ t and 9″ t ; squirrels are 3″ t. PROVENANCE: From a fine collection. CONDITION: Large rabbit and squirrels with very light playwear. Small rabbit with slight thinning along one facial seam. Overall very good. 1-14607 (600-800) – Lot 1400 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction - Fall 2014 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
