HANDSOME AND IMPORTANT EARLY STEIFF BULLY DOG WITH ORIGINAL HORSEHAIR COLLAR AND ID.

Here we have a fantastic and highly collectible version of Steiff’s original Bully bulldog from the late 1920s. Bully is sitting, head jointed, and made from orange and white mohair. His jowls and forehead are made from velvet. All of his fabrics have darkened a bit over time. His ears are lined in wire and are poseable. Bully has oversized and very expressive brown and black glass pupil eyes. His face comes to life with a black embroidered nose, airbrushing, and a few well placed freckles. He has black embroidered claws on his four paws. He retains a good portion of his traditional horsehair collar, a typical Steiff accessory of the period. This usually breaks or falls off over the course of time. Steiff introduced Bully to the world in 1927 and he was an instant sensation with both children, as a plaything, and adults, as a collectible accessory. He was modeled on the French Bulldog, the “it” companion of those in the know all across Europe at the time. Bully retains his original bell, collar, and metal rimmed chest tag as his Steiff ID. Sitting Bully appeared in the Steiff catalog in sizes ranging from 10 to 50 centimeters from 1927-1939 overall. SIZE: 5-1/2″ h. PROVENANCE: From a fine collection. CONDITION: As noted. Minor mohair loss, otherwise very good. 1-14593 (1,000-2,000) – Lot 1394
