TWO EARLY 20TH CENTURY STEIFF FARM ANIMALS ON WHEELS.This very vintage lot consists of a Steiff horse and donkey, both on wheels. The horse is circa 1902, standing, unjointed, and made from brown velvet with black horsehair tail. His face is detailed with black shoebutton eyes and velvet ears. He rides upon four metal wheels. His saddle and reins are not original to him. His mane has been lost to time. This velvet horse was most likely produced in Steiff’s pre-button era, prior to 1904. This model was manufactured overall in 12, 14, and 17 cm from 1901-1912. The donkey is from circa 1921. He is standing, unjointed, and made from dark grey felt with a black mane. His face is detailed with black shoebutton eyes and traces of black highlighting indicating his nose and mouth. He rides upon four green regular wooden wheels. He retains his original red felt blanket and partial reins, as well as his small trailing “f” Steiff button as his ID. This very popular model was made overall in 12 sizes ranging from 12cm to 80cm in the 1892-1936 timeframe. SIZE: 6″ h and 8-1/2″ h respectively. PROVENANCE: A fine New England collection. CONDITION: As noted. Velvet horse with playwear and dust, a few tiny holes and a c. 1 cm repair to lower portion of back leg, otherwise good. Felt donkey with a few minor holes, dust, and very light general losses. Otherwise good. 9-25047 (1,000-2,000) – Lot 1385 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction - Fall 2014 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
