EARLY VELVET STEIFF DOG ON WHEELS AND SILK PLUSH TROUT.

This lot consists of a turn of last century Dachshund and a 1950’s era trout fish. The dog is standing, unjointed, and made from brown velvet. He is lightly airbrushed with brown highlighting. His face comes to life with floppy felt ears and black shoebutton eyes. He rides upon four sturdy metal wheels. This pattern was made in 12, 14, 17, 22, and 28 cm from 1901-1918 overall. His IDs has been lost to time. The fish is Steiff’s Forelle or Trout. He is made from tan silk plush and is stuffed with excelsior. His fins and tail are made from turquoise felt which is lightly painted with stripes. His face is detailed with oversized brown and black pupil eyes. Trout’s body is elaborately hand painted to resemble scales. Trout appeared in the line in 1950 as an exclusive for the upscale toy retailer FAO Schwarz. This pattern is considered one of the most desirable early post war Steiff collectibles due to its brevity in the line and unusual form and materials. Trout retains all of his Steiff IDs including his button, yellow tag, and chest tag. SIZE: Dog is 12″ l; trout is 14″ l. PROVENANCE: From a fine collection. CONDITION: Dog has light general playwear and rubbing to velvet with about a 1 cm diameter hole in inside of ear where button was originally. One ear and the underside tail seam has been restitched. The trout is faded overall with general plush losses, but presents well. Overall good. 1-14608 (800-1,200) – Lot 1379
