MONUMENTAL AMPHORA 1900 PARIS EXPOSITION VASE.Monumental Amphora vase depicts art nouveau maiden leaning on side of vase reaching for flower that dangles from lip of vase. Neck of vase is decorated with 3 art nouveau maidens faces with hair flowing down side of neck. Bulbous body of vase has rood design encircling body. Maidens gown flows down back of vase onto oval pedestal foot. Signed on front of vase with artist initials “E.S.T” for Eduard Stellmacher. Vase is finished in shaded blue and green glaze with gilt highlights. A similar example is pictured in book Monsters and Maidens by Byron Vreeland, pg 158. We are told that this won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Signed on underside “Amphora Austria”, “Turn”, “Paris 1900 RSTK”. SIZE: 23-3/4″ t. CONDITION: Two small roots on side of vase have what appear to be cracks but no other damage or sign of repair is seen elsewhere, so we believe these most likely happen during the firing of vase, otherwise very good to excellent. 49808-16 (9,000-12,000) – Lot 1341
