EXTREMELY RARE UNWIN & ROGERS “SWITCHBLADE” CASED PERCUSSION KNIFE PISTOL.NSN. Cal. 28. 7″ overall. Unwin & Rogers made the most popular knife pistol combination in the world in the Victorian era, no doubt making many thousands. The push button spring-blade is an extremely rare variant with few known and this is the only example we are aware ever coming to auction. Also quite rare, is the orig “UNWIN AND ROGERS / SHEFFIELD” gold embossed mahogany casing. 3-1/2″ German silver bbl with British proofs and “UNWIN & ROGERS / PATENTED SHEFFIELD” on left side “NON * XLL” on right side. Two 3-1/2″ blades, clip point blade on right side is manually operated and the double edged blade on left is released and locked by oval German silver button on left side. Gun is mounted with horn slabs, checkered where held as pistol. German silver trapdoor retains caps and balls. CONDITION: Good to very good overall, no finish but gun appears orig and complete with scattered dings, dents and scratches on German silver. Horn slabs are complete with a couple hairline cracks, hand worn patina. Blades are grey overall, dagger point has old cleaning and sharpening at point. Functional overall, including strong switchblade mechanism and good gun mechanism. Pistol when cocked extends a folding trigger which is still functional. Accompanying bag flask retains about half its orig varnish and bright blue to spring, nipple wrench combination vent pick is very good. Oiler and cap tin label are new additions. Single cavity ball mold is good with iron patina. Casing is sound and solid with blank round plaque in lid retaining much of its orig varnish with numerous scuffs, scrapes and scratches. Red velvet lining is light faded and soiled with wear with discernible gilt makers mark inside lid is light but all discernible. Accompanying key is functional. 51705-1 JS (6,000-7,000) – Lot 1294
