AMANDUS GENRIKH (HEINRICH) ADAMSON (Estonian, 1855-1929) “CHAMPION LURICH”.Bronze Signed between feet “Champion Lurich/Sculpt et Cisel/A. Adamson/1903 St. Peterbourg”. Also signed on side of base in script “A. Mordur rr?” Note: Georg Lurich (1876-1920) was an Estonian Greco-Roman wrestler and strongman and became the first Estonian to set world weightlifting records & was a multiple world champion in wrestling. In 1912, Estonian sculptor Amandus Adamson cast a bronze statue of Lurich titled “Champion” which won the 1912 Paris Olympic artist contest. Lurich was also the inspirational model for a plaster of paris sculpture by Adamson titled “Kalevipoeg at the Gates of Hell”. This may be the only example of this bronze that has come to the auction market. SIZE: 40″ h CONDITION: Accompanied by its removable fig leaf.
