RARE FIRST MODEL FIRST YEAR OF PRODUCTION COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVER.

SN 28. Cal 36. Usual configuration with 7-1/2″ oct bbl, pin front sight and 1-line New York City address with dashes. Wedge is first type with screw below the slot and notch in the top of the cyl spindle versus the later slotted cyl spindle. Left side of frame is marked with small “COLT’S PATENT”. The silver-plated brass small guard, square back trigger guard and backstrap contain a 1-piece walnut grip. Backstrap and buttstrap channel of the grip are dark and oil stained which obscures any numbers that might be present. Grip appears to be orig. Cyl is unfluted with usual 6 chambers and traces of orig Ormsby Naval battle scene roll marking. Cyl is somewhat battered. According to various publications there were about 1,250 of these revolvers produced in 1850. Accompanied by the Febuary 1955 issue of The Texas Gun Collector, the publication of the Texas Gun Collectors Association, which contains an article on page 21 by Maj. C.D. Domo which features this revolver in two pictures with a small write up that identifies this revolver as having been found by old time gun collector Jack Dutton in San Antonio, TX. The Model 1851 was immediately accepted by the buying public. It was the first light weight revolver with reasonable stopping power after the demise of the Paterson line several years earlier. Few of these early Navys survive today. They usually show extreme hard service with little orig finish. PROVENANCE: Jack Dutton Collection. The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: About good, all matching except wedge which is unnumbered and grip as noted above. No orig finish remains being an overall dark brown patina with scattered fine pitting. Top left edge of the muzzle shows heavy holster wear. Trigger guard retains most of its orig silver finish, slightly thin on the front strap. Backstrap and buttstrap retain about 20% orig finish. Grip has chipped toes with a couple of circular dents and retains most of a restored finish. Mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore with light pitting. 49973-128 JR1 (4,000-6,000) – Lot 1205
