INSCRIBED CIVIL WAR COLT MODEL 1849 PERCUSSION REVOLVER, SAMUEL HARDCASTLE, 81ST NY.

SN 189528. Cal. 31. Standard configuration Colt with 4″ bbl, all matching. Made at height of war fervor when Samuel Hardcastle was mustered into service September 14, 1861 into the Oswego Regiment. He served till mustering out late in 1864. The 81st NY fought with distinction in the Peninsula Campaign losing 137 men at the Battle of Fair Oaks. At the Battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864 the unit suffered 212 casualties, half its number engaged; Sgt. Hardcastle survived the war becoming active in the GAR dying in 1901. CONDITION: Good to very good overall, all matching complete & orig. Metal plum/gray overall retaining strong traces of silver on backstrap & trigger guard and about half of its factory varnish on well fit stocks. Mechanically gun is sound with clean discernible bore.
