RARE EARLY COLT MODEL 1848 BABY DRAGOON PERCUSSION REVOLVER.

SN 110. Cal 31. Usual configuration with 4″ oct bbl, brass pin front sight and 2-line, left hand New York City address. Bbl is made without rammer. Left side of frame is marked with a tiny “COLTS PATENT”. Cyl has 5 chambers with rnd stop notches and a single safety pin. Cyl has the dragoon Indian fight scene roll marking with matching SN and “COLTS PATENT” reading left hand. The silver-plated brass trigger guard and backstrap, with small square-back trigger guard contain a nicely figured 1-piece walnut grip with indistinguishable number in backstrap channel. Hammer spring is the earliest “V-type”. Cyl spindle is the earliest type without grease grooves and has a cupped end to act as a loading rammer. Right recoil shield does not have a capping groove, of which only about 150 were produced. There were about 15,000 of these small revolvers produced 1847-1850 in 4 different bbl lengths with several different cyl configurations and roll markings. Toward the end of production about 2,000 were produced with rammers like it’s successor, the Model 1849. This was Colt’s first successful small frame pocket revolver after the demise of the Paterson line. These revolvers were hungrily sought after by Americans during the great westward migration of Manifest Destiny. They ultimately saw service on the American frontier, throughout the northwest territories and Alaska and eventually around the world. They remained in service throughout the Civil War, well into the 1870’s before being supplanted by self contained cartridge revolvers. They are rarely found today in orig configuration with any orig finish and with the orig “V” hammer spring which was often replaced by the later flat spring. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good to fine. The bbl retains traces of orig blue around the lug, otherwise is a smooth light gray patina. Frame retains 65-70% faded case colors and the hammer about 30% faded case colors. Cyl is a gray patina with serviceable safety pin and shows 60-70% dragoon Indian fight scene roll marking. Trigger guard & backstrap retain most of their orig silver with brass showing through on the trigger bow and spots of the backstrap. Mechanics are fine. Strong bore with good shine and scattered pitting. 49973-88 JR4 (10,000-20,000) – Lot 1179
