COON JIGGER/DAPPER DAN W/ ORIGINAL BOX AND HAND PAINTED WALKING BLACK DANDY.A finely lithographed tin toy with somewhat overstated ethnic caricature on all four sides of the box. The dandy himself has brightly simulated clothing and when the toy is wound, he does a dance on top of the box. Marked on the underside is Dapper Dan Carter’s Coon Jigger by Louis Marx & Co. The toy is in functional working order and overall in very fine condition. Typical wear arms and legs would brush against body. Box lid itself shows no scratching but some alligatoring/oxidation to finish. The second toy, the black wind-up dandy is quite unique in that he is reminiscent of a French Martin toy. He has a tin body covered by cloth clothing, lead feet, and a two part tin painted head. When mechanism is wound and working, he does a wobbling body shifting from right to left. A bit of an oddity/rarity, this toy has quite a presence about it. SIZE: Approx 10″ t. and 8″ respectively. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carol and Jerry Soling. CONDITION: As stated above the Dapper Dan box has had a tear across the front (mended with tape on interior). 1-14705 (600-800) – Lot 1131 Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll Auction - Fall 2014 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
