JAY HALL CONNAWAY (American, 1893-1970) “MOONLIT SEA”, MONHEGAN ISLAND.Oil on Masonite Housed in a hand-carved Newcomb-Macklin 5″ gold leaf finished frame Incised signature lower right “Connaway”, titled on verso and inscribed “Property of Leonebel Connaway” and numbered “H22” NOTE: This painting was created by moonlight with the artist’s easel tied to iron pins in the rocky ledge of Monhegan Island. These pins remain in the cliffs there today. Jay Connaway considered this work his moonlight masterpiece REFERENCE: Illustrated on page 10 in the full color catalog “Jay Hall Connaway A Major Exhibition of Paintings by an American Master”. A copy of this catalog accompanies the painting SIZE: 26″ x 36″. Overall: 32-1/2″ x 42-1/2″. PROVENANCE: Leonebel Connaway, artist’s daughter.
